Juozas Vytautas Juocevičius

Juozas Vytautas Juocevičius (born March 29, 1947 in Prienai , Lithuanian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Soviet boxer of Lithuanian origin. He was European middleweight amateur boxer champion in 1971.

Career

Juozas Juocevičius grew up in Vilnius and started boxing there as a teenager. He later became a member of the leading Lithuanian sports club Žalgiris Kaunas . In 1968 and 1969 he was Lithuanian junior champion and in 1971 and 1973 Lithuanian champion in senior middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight at that time).

In 1969 he first took part in the Soviet championships. He came there in the middleweight division up to the quarterfinals, in which he lost on points against the Ukrainian Eduard Kaufmann. He finished 5th together with three other boxers. As early as 1970 he managed to become Soviet middleweight champion. His final opponent was Anatoly Pankratow, whom he defeated with 5-0 judges' votes. There were no international championships in 1970.

In 1971 he successfully defended this title at the Soviet championship. In the final he won again on points over Anatoly Pankratow, who had beaten the favorite Rufat Riskiev in the semifinals . Juozas Juocevičius was then used at the European Middleweight Championship held in Madrid in May 1971 . There he defeated Victor Varon from Spain , Witold Stachurski from Poland and in the semifinals Hans-Joachim Brauske from the GDR on points and was in the final against Alec Nastag from Romania . This gave Juozas Juocevičius a tough fight and left this only a narrow 3-2 point win. Juozas Juocevičius was thus European champion .

In December 1971, Juouas Juocevičius started at a tournament in Leningrad that was organized by the Soviet Boxing Association. He was defeated there in the semifinals against Anatoly Klimanov on points. He injured himself in the process and was unable to take part in the whole of 1972. He also had no opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games in Munich .

In 1973 he tried a comeback at the Soviet championship. He reached the semi-finals there again, in which he was defeated by Rufat Riskiev.

After these championships he finished his boxer career and graduated from Vilnius University in economics. He also trained to be a boxing trainer. After Lithuania's independence, he was chairman of the Lithuanian boxing coaching council for several years. From 1989 to 1992 he was a member of the techn. Commission of the world boxing association AIBA. Now he is a businessman in the automotive industry in Vilnius.
