Jurgis Alekna

Jurgis Alekna (born February 16, 1873 in Sidabrinė , Švenčionys Rajongemeinde , † October 17, 1952 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian doctor, politician and vice minister .

Life

Alekna grew up in the Želtiškiai farm near Molėtai . In 1893 he graduated from the 2nd grammar school in Vilnius . From 1893 to 1898 he studied medicine at Moscow University . From 1898 he worked in the hospital of the Smolensk Governorate . In 1900 he was arrested in tsarist Russia for possession of Lithuanian newspapers and taken to Liepaja prison. In 1901 he was expelled to Arkhangelsk Governorate . He worked at the Onega Hospital .

From 1902 Jurgis Alekna lived in Ukmergė and headed the hospital in Zarasai . From 1918 to 1919 he was Vice Minister at the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania , after which he headed the Lithuanian Health Authority ( Sveikatos departamentas ) as Director.
