Justus Jonas Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Justus Jonas Church is in the northern settlement of houses Lower Salza the city of Nordhausen in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia . It was built in 1950 as an emergency church and is the only one of the so-called Bartning emergency churches in the state of Thuringia and in the Harz region . The sacred building was named after the reformer Justus Jonas, who was born in Nordhausen . His parish belongs to the southern Harz parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

construction

After the air raids on Nordhausen in April 1945 and the destruction of numerous churches, the emergency church program of the Evangelical Church's relief organization (1948–1951) got involved in the rapid construction of a small church without a tower in the Salza district in the Niedersalza settlement. The internationally supported action extended across all German occupation zones and is based on three types. The construction program developed by Otto Bartning and Otto Dörzbach was based on experiences they had made in assembly and system construction between 1928 and 1932.

In Nordhausen there is one of 41 "Type B" churches with a polygonal sanctuary and around 500 seats. The material shortages of the post-war period forced an optimized construction method; the construction consists of prefabricated wooden trusses from the hall construction, roof panels and standardized windows and doors. The hall trusses rhythmize the interior and allow the wall and roof sub-layer to flow together. It was lined with cleaned bricks from the city's war ruins.

history

Bronze baptism (1429) of the Petrikirche , today in the Justus-Jonas-Kirche

The western district of Niedersalza (Salza) was chosen as the location for the new church, as a new residential area was to be created here. In the spring of 1949, the parish acquired a plot of land on Hüpedenweg following a resolution by the city council.

The sacred building was named after the reformer Justus Jonas , who was born in Nordhausen and was a friend of Martin Luther. The foundation stone was laid on December 9, 1949, and the inauguration took place exactly seven months later, on June 8, 1950, by Bishop D. Müller from Magdeburg. The previous parish Nikolai-West was renamed "Justus-Jonas-Kirchengemeinde" with some extensions. Your first pastor was Fritz Schulze. The congregation received a bronze baptismal font from the destroyed Petrikirche as a gift . Later, an organ paid for by donations was installed. The bell also comes from the Petrikirche.

In 1969 a small rectory was built right next to the church.

The Justus Jonas Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000.
