Justus Erich Bollmann (born March 10, 1769 in Hoya an der Weser; † December 10, 1821 in Kingston , Jamaica ) was a doctor, politician and businessman.

Life

Bollmann, son of a wealthy businessman, studied medicine in Göttingen and went to Paris in 1792 after he had obtained his doctorate to become a doctor.

The French Revolution thwarted this intention. At the request of Frau von Stael , whose acquaintance he had made, in August he saved her lover, the royalist war minister Narbonne , from the persecution of the revolutionary Jacobins in England. In contrast, his attempt in autumn 1793 to free the Marquis de La Fayette from his prison in Olomouc failed . He was arrested for this by the Prussian authorities and sentenced to one month in prison in 1794.

Bollmann then went to America, where he founded a commission business in Philadelphia in 1797, which after initially successful business had to be liquidated in 1803. As an agent of the House of Baring , he attended the Congress of Vienna from 1814-15 . In 1815 he founded a chemical factory near London.

But he died on a trip to the West Indies in Jamaica.

Bollmann is one of the main characters in Heinrich Albert Oppermann's novel Hundred Years . Bollmann's biography was first made known by Karl August Varnhagen von Ense , who was in correspondence with him from 1814-1819 and wrote about Lafayette's liberation from Olomouc by Bollmann and Huger in 1794 in the magazine Minerva (1837) . Bollmann sources have come down to us in the Varnhagen collection .
