The Baring family is a German-British merchant and banker family. In Germany the family belongs to the educated bourgeoisie , in the United Kingdom to some extent also to the nobility .

Older line

The oldest known ancestor is Petrus Baring, a citizen of the Dutch city of Groningen around 1500 . His youngest son Franz Baring was 1565–1582 first Lutheran superintendent of Lauenburg / Elbe for Saxony-Lauenburg . Selected family members in the lineage :

Hanoverian line

All known bearers of the name Baring come from this origin. In the Electorate of Hanover , the Barings belonged to the so-called “ pretty families ” from which, in addition to clergy, farmers, domain and monastery tenants, the higher officials and officers used to emerge. British branch

Johann Baring from Bremen emigrated to England in 1717 . His sons John and Francis founded the banking house John & Francis Baring & Co in London in 1770 (since 1806 Baring Brothers and Comp.), Which became an important financier of government projects in the 19th century and collapsed in 1995. Francis Baring was made a Baronet , of London, in 1793 . His nephew William Baring, whose mother belonged to the Gould family, was bestowed in 1795 under the name Baring-Gould with an increased coat of arms.

Numerous descendants of the company founder were accepted into the British nobility and donated various lines. The descendants of the family also include Diana, Princess of Wales , whose great-grandmother Margaret Baring (1868-1906) was the daughter of Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke , and through her also her son Prince William, Duke of Cambridge .
