Friedrich Julius Rosenbach

Friedrich Julius Rosenbach (born December 16, 1842 in Grohnde , † December 6, 1923 in Göttingen ) was a German medic .

Life

He was born on December 16, 1842 as the son of the chief magistrate Bernhard Rosenbach in Grohnde ad Weser. He comes from a long-established family of scholars in southern Lower Saxony whose ancestor was Johann Philipp Rosenbach , who was pastor in Grone during the Thirty Years' War . In twelve generations, this family produced 16 doctors.

Friedrich Julius Rosenbach studied natural sciences in Heidelberg from 1863 and later in Göttingen with the chemist Friedrich Wöhler . Finally he turned to medicine. In 1867 the Medical Faculty of Göttingen awarded him the degree of Doctor of Medicine on the basis of his experimental work "Investigation of some pathological changes after subcutaneous injection of mercury chloride". In 1868 he passed the medical examination and then turned to pathological anatomy and bacteriology. He volunteered as a doctor in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. He completed his habilitation in Göttingen with “Studies on the influence of carbolic acid against the occurrence of pyemic and putrid infections”. In 1873 he received the Venia legendi for surgery.

He then took over the directorate of the surgical university polyclinic in Göttingen as an associate professor and received a teaching position for general surgery and surgical operations theory. He received the title of a secret medical councilor and in 1920 he was appointed full honorary professor by the medical faculty in Göttingen.

Scientifically, he dealt primarily with the study of surgical wound infection and practical surgery. The monograph “Microorganisms in wound infectious diseases in humans”, published in 1884, is regarded as his main work.

Honors

In 1888 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

The City Council of Göttingen decided on September 8, 1967, to name a short path in the Weende district as "Rosenbachweg" in his honor. Today there is a large student residence there.

family

On May 12, 1877, Rosenbach married Franziska Merkel (* 1856), daughter of the Privy Councilor and Lord Mayor of Göttingen, Georg Merkel and his wife, Sophie, born. Wöhler. His wife was a granddaughter of the chemist Friedrich Wöhler . The couple had four children:
