Julius Philipp Georg Merkel (born May 7, 1829 in Hanover ; † September 4, 1898 in Göttingen ) was Lord Mayor of the city of Göttingen.

Merkel studied law at the University of Göttingen from 1849 . During his studies he became a member of the Hannovera Göttingen fraternity in 1849 , from which he transferred in 1878/79 to the Corps Hansea Göttingen , which was founded out of it, but which soon dissolved again. After the state examinations, he became city secretary in Hanover in 1855 as an administrative lawyer. In 1866 he was transferred to the Prussian Ministry of the Interior in Berlin. From there Merkel 1868 by the magistrate of the city as City Counsel appointed to Göttingen and elected to the post of mayor 1870th In 1885 he received the title of Lord Mayor of the city.

Merkel began reforesting the Hainberg of the Göttingen Forest in 1871 , which was not completed until 1893. Important infrastructure measures of the city fall during his tenure as mayor, such as the central water supply (1877) and the modern disposal of waste water (1890). Land consolidation was carried out in the town's Feldmark in 1877 . The city built numerous schools and promoted the further expansion of the Georg August University, which grew rapidly and gained international recognition due to the progressive Prussian science policy under Friedrich Althoff . In terms of cultural policy, the construction of the German Theater (1890) was outstanding for the city . No less important are the new central cemetery (1880), the communal slaughterhouse (1883), the disinfection facility (1884) and the renovation of the old town hall (1883). On Merkel's initiative, the Göttingen memorial plaques were introduced based on the Jena model .

His successor was Georg Friedrich Calsow .

The Merkel stone, inaugurated on May 6, 1897 and designed by Ferdinand Hartzer , which is located at the foot of the Hainberg, commemorates Merkel.

family

Merkel was born with Sophie Wöhler married. His wife was the daughter of the chemist Friedrich Wöhler (1800–1882). The couple's daughter, Franziska Merkel (* 1856) married the physician Friedrich Julius Rosenbach (1842–1923) in 1877 .
