Erich Schmidt (born December 20, 1882 in Moringen ; † October 6, 1964 ) was a German lawyer, Lord Mayor and City Director of Göttingen .

Life

Schmidt was the son of a manor owner. He attended high school in Goslar and Hann. Münden and studied law at the Universities of Tübingen and Göttingen . In Tübingen he had been a member of the Corps Rhenania since 1902 . In 1905 Schmidt passed the first and in 1911 the second legal examination. He took part in the First World War as a cavalry officer. He became a district judge in 1924 and in 1927, at his own request, transferred to the district court. In 1944 he was forced to join the city administration and was appointed head of the housing department. Shortly after the American troops marched in, he was appointed Lord Mayor of the city on April 11, 1945 by the military administration. After the Council Constitution was introduced, he took over the post of City Director on January 3, 1946. In 1951 he retired.

In October 1953 Schmidt became chairman of the supervisory board of Gothaer Lebensversicherung , of which he had been a member since 1946.

Awards

Erich Schmidt was an honorary citizen of the city of Göttingen (1952) and an honorary citizen of the University of Göttingen.
