Gerhard Boss

Gerhard Boß (born January 7, 1923 in Nuremberg ; † March 15, 2012 in Ebermannstadt ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian , honorary prelate and author .

Boß gained nationwide fame through the 30-part television series Credo on the Catholic Adult Catechism, produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk in 1987 . Ecumenism is of particular concern to him .

Life

Boß was born in Nuremberg in 1923 to an Evangelical Lutheran father and a Roman Catholic mother. He grew up with two sisters in Erlangen and was active in the Catholic youth movement. After graduating from high school , he was drafted and had to go to the front in Russia. There he suffered frostbite on both legs, as a result of which he was taken to a hospital in Bad Saarow . From now on, Boss was dependent on two prosthetic legs. After the Second World War he studied Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen . However, since he felt constricted there, he moved to the University of Munich . There he did his doctorate in dogmatics with Michael Schmaus in the early 1960s with his dissertation " The doctrine of justification in the Bible commentaries of Cornelius a Lapide ".

In July 1951, Boss was ordained a priest and then became a chaplain in Bayreuth . From June 1, 1957 to December 31, 1973 he was rector of the Feuerstein youth castle . Influenced by the ecumenical attitude of his parents, he was particularly involved in the fields of youth, adult education and ecumenism. In 1967 he was elected regional president of the Federation of German Catholic Youth in Bavaria. As a result of the Second Vatican Council , the Archbishop of Bamberg Josef Schneider entrusted him with the formation of an ecumenical commission. From 1969 to 1998 he was chairman of this commission. He was also head of the ecumenical department in the ordinariate and from 1976 to 1990 the first ecumenical consultant for the Archdiocese of Bamberg . In 1977 he was elected cathedral capital. At the University of Bamberg , Boss held various teaching positions, including the ecumenical study course of VELKD and DBK .

Honors

In 1984 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . In the same year he received the title of Papal Honorary Prelate. In 2004 he founded the Dr. Gerhard Boß Foundation , a foundation for the elderly and disabled in the Forchheim district . On November 23, 2006, the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg awarded him an honorary doctorate . Boss is the bearer of the coat of arms of the city of Ebermannstadt .
