Cornelius a Lapide

Cornelius a Lapide , also Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen (born December 8, 1567 in Bocholt near Liège , † March 12, 1637 in Rome ) was a Jesuit and professor of exegesis . His writings on the interpretation of the Bible were very common in the 17th to 19th centuries.

Life

As was customary among scholars at the time, he transferred his original - Dutch - name Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen (= from the stone or from the stone) into Latin, just as he wrote his writings in Latin . Between 1577 and 1584 he attended the Marzellengymnasium in Cologne and then studied in Leuven .

In 1592 he joined the Jesuit order. From 1598 to 1616 he was professor of exegesis in Leuven , then until his death at the Collegium Romanum in Rome. On the entire Bible (except for Psalms and Job ) he wrote extensive commentaries with many materials. He is considered one of the most fruitful exegetes of the Jesuit order. The first collective edition of his works was published in Antwerp in 1681 and comprised ten folio volumes . His commentaries on the Bible appear to have been the most widespread among the Catholic clergy until around 1900. However, even in the opinion of Catholic experts, the quality of his works should not be entirely in proportion to their wide distribution.
