Daniel Eberhard Baring (born November 8, 1690 in Oberg ; † August 19, 1753 in Hanover ) was a German librarian and historian , paleographer and diplomat . He recorded the library of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and wrote the first bibliography in the history of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

family

Baring came from the Hanoverian line of the Baring family . Baring's grandfather was the theologian and educator Eberhard Baring (1608-1659). Daniel Baring was the eldest son of the pastor in Oberg near Hildesheim , Henning Baring (1653–1693), and the pastor's daughter Ilsa Sophie geb. Berckelmann (1670–1735), a granddaughter of the theologian Theodor Berckelmann . Since his father died early, his mother married the businessman Balthasar Jänecken from Salzhemmendorf . His younger brother Johann Heinrich Baring (1692–1705) died in childhood.

Baring was married twice. He married Sophie Magdalena born in Hanover in 1728. Schröder (1706–1734), daughter of the Hanover city governor Justus Christoph Schröder and his wife Ilse Margarethe born. Bödecker. From this marriage came the son Eberhard Johann Baring (1731-1808), pastor primarius in Elbingerode .

After the death of his first wife, Baring married Emilie Margarethe (1710–1788) in Hanover in 1735, daughter of the court registry Berthold Rabe and his wife Anna Elisabeth. From this marriage there were six children.

Live and act

Baring lost his father at an early age and was therefore initially raised and privately tutored by his stepfather. From 1706 to 1713 Baring attended school in Quedlinburg , where he first did oriental studies, then theology and medicine, which he had to give up due to lack of money. He earned his living for a while teaching Catholic counts from Italy in the languages of the Bible. At the suggestion of his cousin, the librarian Johann Georg Eccard , Baring came to "study history and scholarly history" and studied literature at the University of Helmstedt .

In 1718 Baring was finally appointed as an assistant librarian at the Electoral Library in Hanover. He worked in this position for a total of 36 years, first under his cousin Eccard , then under Simon Friedrich Hahn , Christian Ludwig Scheidt and Johann Daniel Gruber .

During his time as a Hanoverian librarian, Baring earned merit through his Succincta Notitia ... , published in 1729 , the first bibliography in the history of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. An intended second, improved edition was prevented by a dispute with Johann Daniel Gruber, so that it could not be published by Georg Septimius Andreas von Praun until 1744 .

On behalf of his friend Friedrich Simon Löffler , the nephew and heir of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Baring compiled a directory of the library privately built by Leibniz. Together with Eccard, Baring undertook archival journeys that laid the foundation for the Clavis diplomatica published in 1737 and 1753 (see publications ). Baring published this at personal sacrifice and against Gruber's resistance as the “first diplomatic bibliography ” and as a forerunner of Johann Ludolph Walther's Lexicon diplomaticum .

Baring's Museographia Brvnsvico-Lvnebvrgica (see writings ), a description of the art and cultural treasures of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, is also considered important .
