Justus Glesker

Justus Glesker (* between 1610 and 1623 in Hameln ; † December 2, 1678 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German sculptor. His main works include furnishing the Bamberg Cathedral .

Life

Glesker was born between 1610 and 1623 as the son of the sculptor Jost Klescker , with whom he was also an apprentice. He then traveled to the Netherlands and Italy . Between 1648 and 1653 he created his main work, furnishing the Bamberg Cathedral. At that time Glesker lived in Frankfurt, where he was granted citizenship as an “art sculptor” in 1654 and was city ​​captain . In 1669/71 he was also involved in furnishing the Barfüßerkirche in Frankfurt .

Glesker was regarded by contemporaries as one of the best sculptors in southern Germany, and Joachim von Sandrart also mentions the artist several times and praised his work in Bamberg Cathedral and smaller ivory carvings.
