Justus Wehmer
Justus Wehmer (* around 1690 ; † 1750 ) was a German builder of the Baroque era . He was a master builder of the Hildesheim diocese . Among other things, he was responsible for the baroque redesign of the cathedral in Hildesheim . He also built canons' houses in the city and castles in Westphalia.
Life
Little is known about his life beyond his works. He supposedly originally came from Darmstadt or Mannheim . Architects such as Hermann Korb , Louis Remy de la Fosse , Sudfeld Vick and the architectural theorist Leonhard Christoph Sturm were models for his buildings .
It can be traced for the first time in 1708 in the diocese of Hildesheim. In 1712 he redesigned the western front of the Heiliges Kreuz church in Hildesheim. His first building in Westphalia was Körtlinghausen Castle from 1713. Almost at the same time he built Vinsebeck Castle for the von der Lippe family . Both buildings were inspired by French models and have an H-shape. In Vinsebeck, parts of the stucco interior decoration are still preserved.
In 1717 or 1718 he was called back from Westphalia to Hildesheim to examine damage to the cathedral. His report provided for a renewal of the crossing ceiling. In addition, he redesigned the interior of the cathedral (choir and transept) together with other artists until 1722. Hardly anything was left of it after the destruction in World War II.
Elector Clemens August of Bavaria as Bishop of Hildesheim sent Johann Conrad Schlaun to renovate the episcopal chancellery building in Hildesheim. The construction management was the job of Wehmer. He also made structural changes to the seat of the auxiliary bishop. For the cathedral cantor Johann Bernhard Joseph von Weichs - for whose family he had already created Körtlinghausen Castle - he built a curia in Hildesheim in 1729, which later housed the episcopal Konvikt . Presumably he also built the new Curia of the Provost of the Cathedral in 1730. He also carried out expansion work on Palais Brabeck - later the episcopal court and from 1818 to 1945 the seat of the landscape of the former Principality of Hildesheim . There were also other smaller orders.
In a slightly modified form of his earlier castles, he built Herringhausen Castle for Leopold Anton Wilhelm von Schorlemer and Vörden Castle in Vörden for the von Haxthausen family from 1720 onwards . From 1734 he built Welda Castle for Hermann Adolph von Haxthausen , which is closely linked to the building history of Vinsebeck Castle. The Corvey wagon house and portal were also from Wehmer.
