The rural municipality Jyväskylä ( Finnish. Jyväskylän maalaiskunta [ ˈjyvæskylæn ˈmɑːlɑi̯skuntɑ ], Swedish. Jyväskylä landskommun ) is a former municipality in Finland . It included the area around the city of Jyväskylä , into which it was incorporated at the beginning of 2009.

Seat of the municipality of Jyväskylä

After the city of Jyväskylä had been founded in 1837, the rural community of Jyväskylä emerged from the surrounding areas of the parish of Jyväskylä in 1868 when the political communities were separated from the church administration. The rural community initially completely surrounded the city area. As Jyväskylä grew, areas from the rural community were gradually added to the city of Jyväskylä. Most recently, the rural community of Jyväskylä comprised an area of 534.4 km² (of which 83.6 km² inland waters) northwest and southeast of Jyväskylä. The largest settlement centers in the area of the former rural community are the places Vaajakoski , Palokka and Tikkakoski , which has grown together with the core town of JyväskyläJyväskylä Airport . The town of Jyväskylä was the seat of the municipal administration. The population of the rural community rose sharply. In 2008 it was last 36,465.

Since large parts of the rural community of Jyväskylä already have urban character, there is hardly a clear transition to the actual Jyväskylä urban area and a large part of the residents in Jyväskylä work, shop and spend their free time, the rural community was incorporated into the city of Jyväskylä at the beginning of 2009. At the same time, the municipality of Korpilahti was connected to the new Greater Jyväskylä with around 130,000 inhabitants. At the time of the merger with the city of Jyväskylä, the rural municipality of Jyväskylä was the last Finnish municipality that was still called the rural municipality .
