The K + K Klaas & Kock BV & Co. KG is an in Gronau Canada based food company . Klaas & Kock currently operates (as of 2018) 215 supermarkets and hypermarkets in northern North Rhine-Westphalia and western Lower Saxony .

History of the company

Klaas & Kock was founded in 1950 by the two businesspeople Hans Klaas and Hermann Kock . At first, they specialized in the wholesale of confectionery , and later also in general food. The first smaller store opened in 1955, and in 1961 the first larger store opened in Nordhorn . In 1965 Klaas & Kock grew to seven branches, in the same year the central warehouse and administration were built in Gronau. In 1971, when the company already had 19 shops, the in-house Drilander meat factory and a fruit and vegetable center were added.

In 1983 Hermann Kock withdrew from the company, and Hans Klaas' sons joined the management. At that time, Klaas & Kock had 50 branches. The 100th supermarket was opened in Freren in 1992 , and the 150th supermarket was opened in Dülmen in 1998 . The 200th supermarket followed in 2007 and the owner, who was still very much involved in the management, celebrated his 80th birthday. Company founder Hans Klaas died on May 9, 2011 at the age of 83. K + K is one of the last family-run German retail companies of this size. In terms of sales, the company ranks 23rd among grocery retailers in Germany (as of 2018).

In December 2017, fraudsters managed to get a suitcase with the proceeds (1.8 million euros) handed over to them with a repainted delivery van that had been converted into a money transporter with magnetic foils. The fraudsters, charged with further acts, were later caught and sentenced on May 25, 2020 to one to 12 years in prison.

The northernmost supermarket is in Strücklingen , the southernmost in Castrop-Rauxel , the easternmost in Sulingen and the westernmost in Sonsbeck . All 215 K + K supermarkets are supplied from the central warehouse in Gronau with an attached fruit and vegetable wholesaler. A branch in Bad Essen has the special feature that it is also open on Sundays.

One of the largest branches after Gronau is in Rheine on Osnabrücker Straße. The store opened in 1978 with its own parking deck was demolished in 2014 and replaced in 2016 by a new building with over 4,000 square meters of retail space.
