Kästner is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon , southwest of Mare Smythii , southeast of Gilbert crater and northeast of La Pérouse . The crater rim is eroded, the crater floor largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1961 after the German mathematician Abraham Gotthelf Kästner .
