The Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium Wilhelmshaven was the oldest of the three grammar schools in Wilhelmshaven . It is named after the artist Käthe Kollwitz .

history

Since it was founded in Wilhelmshaven in 1885, the grammar school has changed its name several times. Initially founded as a high school for girls and later renamed Queen Luise School, today's Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium was then called "Oberschule für Mädchen" and then until 1965 "Gymnasium für Mädchen".

On September 16, 1965, what was then a grammar school for girls moved into a new building in what is now the center of Wilhelmshaven. According to reports from contemporary witnesses, all the schoolchildren and teachers marched together from the old school building to the sound of a specially composed song (with recorder accompaniment) across the city center to the new building in tom-Brok-Straße. The school was now called "Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule".

In accordance with a legal stipulation, the type of school was incorporated into the school name in 1996 and the school was renamed “Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium”. The grammar school has been run by Anke Steckhan since August 2005.

In the 2010 school year, around 675 students attended grades 5 to 13 and were taught by around 55 teachers.

Since the 2012/2013 school year, the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium has been one of the two locations of the New Gymnasium Wilhelmshaven . Within several years, a new, modern location was created on Mühlenweg, where both locations have been based since the 2013/2014 school year.

Projects

In addition to several artistic projects (choirs, combo, theater, ...), which took place individually but also in cooperation with the other grammar schools in Wilhelmshaven, working groups for astronomy, art, chess, school newspapers, sports and the Internet presence were offered at the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium.

The traditional "Concert of the Gymnasien", which took place in spring 2003 for the 50th time, was of particular importance. On three consecutive evenings, different musical projects from the three grammar schools in Wilhelmshaven were presented individually and across schools in the auditorium of the Käthe Kollwitz grammar school.

For many years, the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium successfully took part in biology and chemistry competitions at Jugend forscht and Schüler Experiment and has received several awards for the large number of winners and prizewinners at regional, state and federal level of these competitions.

Every year an external prevention seminar lasting several days on the subject of "AIDS, drugs and sex education" was held with the ninth grade.

The Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium maintained partnerships with both the Collège Madame de Sevigné in Perpignan in the south of France and with the Swedish Tycho Braheskolan in Helsingborg and organized regular student exchanges. Later there was a student exchange with the Gdańskie Autonomiczne Gimnazjum from Poland and the Tai hang Gymnasium in China.
