Käthe Riechers (born Paulsen; born August 14, 1906 in Dortmund ; † February 16, 1964 in Kiel ) was a German social worker. After the Second World War , she helped to set up the workers' welfare in Schleswig-Holstein .

Life

Käthe Riechers grew up as one of six children, including Frederik Paulsen , the founder of the pharmaceutical company Ferring , in Kiel. She learned to be a nurse and then became a carer. In 1936 she married Heinrich Riechers (1907–1993), who had joined the SPD at the age of 18 .

After the end of the Second World War, she moved to Eddelak with her husband and their two children . After the dictatorship, she returned to the roots of labor welfare and wanted to help people. For example, she set up a counseling center in Eddelak to support those looking for help, including refugees and indigent locals.

In 1946 the family moved to Itzehoe . The workers 'welfare in Schleswig-Holstein was rebuilt from bottom to top after 1945, activities began in many places and there Riechers joined the emerging workers' welfare. From 1950 she was the first chairperson and until her death in 1964 she was the central figure. As one of the most important people in the voluntary work in Itzehoe at that time, she ensured that the plight of many people could be alleviated. Between June and November 1949 alone, 1,500 portions of food were served as part of the feeding of small children under their direction by the AWO. They themselves and the AWO under their leadership took care of the care and supply of numerous seniors, including through daily housekeeping. She also organized the annual senior Christmas parties for around 200 people. She built a sewing room, which was extremely important for the families of the city in the time of scarcity. In 1952 alone, around 3,000 women were using the machines.

Käthe Riechers was also involved in the structures at state level, so she was a member of the state board of the AWO and active in local politics. From 1948 to 1955 she was one of the first women to be a member of the Itzeho council, and she was a member of the district assembly from 1962 until her death in 1964.

After her death, Pastor Gieseking from Itzeho wrote: “In many meetings at the town hall a. At the District Office I saw how Ms. Riechers stood up for those in need and for the elderly in our city in her heart-winning way. No woman in Itzehoe has created such a sphere of activity in social work. "
