history

In 1865 the entrepreneur Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn acquired the Lichterfelde and Giesensdorf estates near Berlin with the aim of creating a villa colony there for the upper class. The goods were in the catchment area of the Berlin – Magdeburg railway line , although there were no train stations there before. The railway company approved the construction of the Lichterfelde West station . In return, Carstenn had to transfer some land to the company. These properties included a property between Bahnstrasse (since 1916: Köhlerstrasse), Curtiusstrasse , Jägerndorferzeile and Friedrichstrasse . Between 1873 and 1874, four residential buildings for the railway company were built on the site, which was around 21,000 square meters in size at the time, based on the design by the architect Helling. The houses were among the first in the newly created villa colony and, with their height and architectural style, were more of a specialty. The houses were identical and each had eight rental apartments. Several toilets and stables were built between the houses and in the immediate vicinity . Agriculture was practiced on the undeveloped areas. There was no planned expansion of the residential complexes on Curtiusstrasse, Friedrichstrasse or Jägerndorferzeile. In the 1960s, the stables and toilets were demolished and replaced with garages. Large parts of the property were later sold. Residential houses were built on the land on Friedrichstrasse and Jägerndorferzeile. There was initially a nursery on Curtiusstrasse until the Athene primary school was built on a 13,000 square meter property in the 1990s .
