The managing director of KölnKongress GmbH has been Bernhard Conin since it was founded in 1994. The houses are owned by the shareholders, the City of Cologne or Koelnmesse, but are operated by KölnKongress GmbH.

history

The origin of KölnKongress GmbH, which was founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of Koelnmesse (49% of the shares) and the City of Cologne (51% of the shares), lies in the former congress department of Koelnmesse.

With the takeover of the Gürzenich Köln in 1997 - a secular building from the 15th century in the heart of the city center, which had recently been completely refurbished within two years for 30 million euros - ten additional employees from the original congress department of Koelnmesse switched to KölnKongress. At that time, KölnKongress was already overseeing the supporting events for the Cologne trade fairs and markets the Koelnmesse congress centers when the trade fair is not in progress.

Since June 1998 the traditional Cologne area of the " Tanzbrunnen Köln " has been operated by KölnKongress. In addition to the characteristic fountain, the area includes a 30,000 m² park area with an open-air stage, the gastronomically used Rhine terraces with a view over the Rhine to Cologne's old town and the Theater am Tanzbrunnen, built in 1994.

In 2000, KölnKongress took over the Bastei , a round building by the architect Riphahn , which protrudes over the Rhine , was formerly part of the Cologne fortress and was used as an event location until summer 2018. The bastion is currently being extensively rebuilt and renovated by the city of Cologne. It is closed during construction work and is not available for events.

In cooperation with the Cologne Zoo , KölnKongress has made it possible since April 2002 in the ZooLocation to hold events for up to 400 people in one of the largest German aquariums on an area of 2,000 m².

In May 2004, another event location was created directly on the Rhine with the 3,500 m² km 689 Cologne Beach Club on the Tanzbrunnen site.

The Flora Köln , one of Cologne's most historic buildings from the Wilhelminian era, with five representative rooms and located in the middle of the Botanical Garden, was added in April 2006. After three years of general renovation (2011-2014), the Flora was reopened on June 12, 2014.

Since September 2008, KölnKongress has been in charge of the listed state house at Rheinpark . The former “State House”, built in 1928 - located between the exhibition grounds and the Tanzbrunnen area - with its 16,900 m² of exhibition space is suitable for congresses, events and corporate events as well as exhibitions. Since a new musical theater is to be built, KölnKongress returned the building to the city of Cologne in January 2015.

In September 2016, KölnKongress GmbH (51 percent) founded KölnKongress Gastronomie GmbH together with Koelnmesse GmbH (49 percent). This has been the exclusive catering partner in Gürzenich and Bastei since April 1, 2017. On May 1, 2019, KölnKongress Gastronomie GmbH also took over the catering operations at the Theater am Tanzbrunnen, the open-air area, as well as the Rheinterrassen with adjoining beer garden and the km 689 Cologne Beach Club. Bernhard Conin is the managing director of KölnKongress Gastronomie GmbH.

Events

Over 2,000 events take place in the KölnKongress facilities every year. Of these, an average of 61% are congresses and meetings, 20% social events, 6% cultural and carnival events each, 5% other and 2% stock exchanges and exhibitions.

In 2017, more than a million visitors came to the KölnKongress. Around 17% of this is attributable to congresses and meetings, 17% to stock exchanges and exhibitions, 28% to cultural events, 20% to social events, 14% to carnival events and 4% to other events.

According to the 2017 ifo study by the Institute for Economic Research, the direct and indirect production effects of KölnKongress GmbH lead to nationwide sales of around 411.8 million euros, of which around 301.4 million euros come from Cologne alone. The city of Cologne is entitled to 3 million euros in direct taxes from these sales.
