The Cologne tribes are an amalgamation of around 80 associations, round tables and interest groups from the Cologne area, which have set themselves the task of depicting and reliving life in earlier eras and / or other countries. The first clubs of this type have existed in Cologne since the 1950s.

The tribes include those on various topics such as Tatars , Huns , Teutons , Mongols , Vikings and Ostrogoths , but also pirates, knights and robbers. Many tribes organize their own camps every year, which can be visited by interested parties, such as the Hun camp . There are replicated or original dwellings like tents of the nomads, yurts of the Huns and Mongols, tipisset up by the Indians or the Viking fixed structures. The tribal members wear original or self-made traditional costumes. Particular emphasis is placed on closely following historical documents or originals. Some members also learn the respective language.

The 1st Cologne Huns Horde from 1958 are considered the first “tribe” . The Cologne graphic artist Horst Drenske was inspired by the film Attila - The King of the Huns and initially founded the Society for Ethnology , which was later renamed. The purpose of the association is to explore the life of the Huns under their King Attila and to bring them closer to the people of today.

In 1991 several groups joined forces to form the Cologne tribes ; In 2012 the organization had around 80 member clubs. In 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2010 the tribes held a large common camp. The last two log stores in Cologne took place in Blücherpark . The entry fee is donated to CF Self-Help Cologne by people suffering from cystic fibrosis . From 2000 to 2010, around 60,000 euros were raised.

There are tribes that take part in the carnival , for example by going with the Rose Monday procession. Most, however, do not see themselves primarily as a carnival club . In many associations, spirituality plays a major role, including neo-shamanistic practices. Many club members have resigned from the church and have weddings and funeral ceremonies performed by their club shaman.
