König & Komp. Villach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

König & Komp. Villach is a former Carinthian cooking and baking ingredient manufacturer. The company donated baking powder , vanilla sugar , Einkochhilfe, baked egg, pudding and showers for the Austrian market ago. The company's best-known product was FLANA pudding, which is still commercially available today. The production facility was located in Villach .

history

After the Soviet Union occupied the part of Austria in which the Oetker Austria production facility was located in 1945 , its continued existence was at risk. In addition, Oetker had to withdraw from Austria. The one from the company Dr. Oetker in Baden near Vienna , director Walter König, who left the company, tried to keep the factory and production. Operating under his own name and cut off from the headquarters in Bielefeld , he therefore manufactured the same products as before in Villach in the newly founded company KÖNIG & Komp. Villach.

Walter König was the son-in-law of Oetker Austria founder Gustav Hornberg. KÖNIG started selling in August 1949. Initially in a rented property, which soon became too small. Thus the offices were moved to an external property.

The Dr. Oetker was nationalized in Austria between 1945 and 1955. Then it was possible to break away from the nationalization by the Soviet Union after its occupation troops had withdrawn. Dr. Oetker Austria was founded as “Dr. August Oetker ” again in Salzburg , which was based on a personal initiative by Rudolf-August Oetker . At this point, however, KÖNIG was already successfully represented on the market, so it was decided to "jointly" conquer market shares in "controlled competition". As a result of the nationalization, the Dr. Oetker damaged, consumers still met her with suspicion.

Until 1961, the KÖNIG company was located at Tafernerstraße 6 in Villach, although production was only based here. The offices had moved at the time. In 1962 the company moved to the new building at Tirolerstraße 80. The Siemens company moved in as KÖNIG's successor on Tafernerstraße . Until 1962, Walter König was the sole managing director of the company himself, in 1963 he shared this role with Rudolf Schulz, the former head of the Oetker factory in Baden. From 1964 to 1966 Schulz was the sole managing director. Since 1966, Dr. August Oetker GmbH noted as managing director. In 1962, KÖNIG & Komp. Was founded by Dr. Oetker completely taken over. The products were sold under the name KÖNIG until 1965. In 1965 production was stopped or Dr. Oetker changed over. Until 1999, Oetker Austria manufactured the products for the Austrian market in the same company building. The company was best known for the picture recipes that were available on the market for the first time. 340 different recipes on the baking powder and vanilla sugar packs alone have been published over the course of around 10 years.

Products

Production started in August 1949 with the six product categories of baking powder, vanilla sugar, preserving aid, baking protein, pudding and soda. The baking protein product was discontinued in 1954 and the shower in 1956. To this end, the product pudding has been expanded to include the FLANA feature . The FLANA was introduced as a premium pudding. According to KÖNIG, the advantages, which are still emphasized today, are that it remains thin when cooked, so it can be easily portioned and does not skin when it cools.

The color scheme used by KÖNIG for the first time should make it easier for the buyer to find the right products:

  • Blue = baking powder
  • Red = vanilla sugar
  • Green = preserving aid
  • Brown = pudding
  • Yellow = baking protein

With KÖNIG, consumers quickly associated blue with baking powder and red with vanilla sugar. Therefore, competing companies still sometimes use the colors red and blue for these two groups.

Baking powder and vanilla sugar

The company KÖNIG & Komp. Was the inventor of the picture recipes. On the front of the pack was a photo of what the end result should look like, on the back was the corresponding recipe and necessary ingredients. The baking powder and vanilla sugar packets alone contained a total of 340 different recipes, for which a scrapbook was also made.

Preserving aid

With 30 different recipes on the jars, the number was much more manageable. There was no album for it.

Baking protein

The product baking protein, with which the egg white could be replaced, was aimed at both households and large kitchens. It was suggested for breading, for the production of pasta, dumplings, dumplings, semolina pancakes, fritters and much more. 25 different recipes were published, but no scrapbook. It is interesting, however, that in contrast to all other KÖNIG products, the baking protein was not mentioned in the countless KÖNIG pastry recipes. Perhaps that is why the great success did not materialize, which is why the product was taken off the market in 1954.

pudding

The packaging of the pudding powder has been relaunched several times, the first of which in the mid-1950s. The last appearance was in the early 1960s by Dr. Oetker designed.

The pudding was available in 12 types:

  • chocolate
  • vanilla
  • (Walnut) nut
  • almond
  • raspberry
  • strawberry
  • lemon
  • orange
  • apricot
  • cocoa
  • nougat
  • semolina

Here, too, there were recipes on the back, there was no scrapbook for it. How many pudding recipes appeared in total can no longer be reconstructed today.

FLANA

The FLANA pudding is an invention of the KÖNIG & Komp company. When the company was founded in 1965 by Dr. Oetker was taken over, the product was henceforth sold under the Oetker brand.

shower

The effervescent powder was relaunched after a short time. The original, seemingly simple package design, which gave no indication of the manufacturer on the front, was replaced by a more elaborate design with the typical König crowns. Continuation stories were placed on the back (one for each flavor). In total, the 3 stories were divided into 75 individual packages. A scrapbook was not published. It was available in the following versions:

  • Indian fruity - raspberry flavor (No. 1 to 25)
  • Desert shower - orange flavor (No. 26 to 50)
  • Polar shower - lemon flavor (No. 51 to 75)

Publications

In the only 16 years of its existence, KÖNIG & Komp. Published 8 recipe brochures, 1 recipe book and a scrapbook for the recipes on the baking powder and vanilla sugar packets.

Promotional gifts

KÖNIG tried to make its products palatable with small promotional gifts. König had most of these accessories produced in several colors. Today only a part of these additions is known:

comeback

KÖNIG returned to the Austrian market in 2010 about 50 years after production was discontinued. The basic products "KÖNIG Vanilla Sugar" and "KÖNIG Baking Powder" were again available to professional consumers in 1 kg cans with a resealable aroma seal.

The reason for this was the takeover of the distribution of products of the traditional Austrian brand RUMA (Rudolf Maschina) in 2009 by Dr. Oetker. However, the trademark rights to RUMA were not taken over. Sales under the RUMA brand were limited to one year. After the deadline, Dr. Oetker therefore changed the name to KÖNIG in 2010 in order to enable RUMA users to continue to purchase a traditional Austrian bakery product brand.

Since the acceptance of the former RUMA users towards the traditional Austrian brand KÖNIG did not occur to the extent hoped for, the decision was made in 2012 to discontinue the KÖNIG brand for economic reasons.
