The king's vibrating alga ( Oscillatoria princeps ) is a type of filamentous cyanobacteria .

Features and habitat

The filaments are blue-green, red-brown, reddish or purple in color. The cells are wider than they are long and have gas vesicles. The cell walls in the trichome can be seen. O. princeps does not form heterocysts .

The king's rocker alga is distributed worldwide as plankton in fresh water.

Systematics

The species is the type species of the genus Oscillatoria . A synonym is Lyngbya princeps ( Vaucher ex Hansgirg , 1892 ). It is similar to Oscillatoria limosa , this has wider cells in relation to its length.
