The Oscillatoria (swinging algae) are a genus group of cyanobacteria . The bacterial threads are capable of a slowly oscillating movement, as the name refers to.

features

Oscillatoria always form unbranched threads from a row of cells. They usually appear in dense mats up to several centimeters thick, but only rarely individually or in small groups. Under extreme conditions, the threads have a thin, colorless and solid sheath that is open at the outer end. The filaments are straight or slightly wavy in shape and are usually between eight and 60 micrometers wide. In good environmental conditions, the threads are flexible, they “ oscillate ”.

The cells are from short cylindrical to barrel-shaped, rarely disc-like shape, but always shorter than wide. The cells at the end of the threads are broadly rounded, sometimes head-shaped. Aerotopes , i.e. gas bubbles, are absent in the cells, but they have fine, blue-green, brownish or pink-colored granules with coiled thylakoids , which are mostly irregularly distributed throughout the cell.

Distribution and ecology

The genus is distributed worldwide. The species grow on a wide variety of substrates (mud, stone, sand) in fresh water, mostly in shallow waters or the riparian zones e.g. B. large lakes. They rarely thrive on wet soils. The large mats, which develop submerged in the benthos , but later float on the water surface in large quantities, are typical .

Systematics

Type species is the Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gamont, first described in 1892 . The genus includes the following species:
