Jean-Pierre Vaucher

Jean-Pierre Étienne Vaucher (born April 27, 1763 in Geneva ; † January 5, 1841 ibid) was a Swiss theologian and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Vaucher ".

Life

After studying theology, he was ordained in 1787 and was then pastor. In addition to his job, he also dealt with botany. He later received a call as professor of church history at the University of Geneva , he was also honorary professor of botany and plant physiology . From 1808 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His scientific achievement in botany consists, among other things, in the fact that he studied the development history of algae for the first time as planned. In his Histoire des Conferves d'eau douce he describes the processes of conjugation in the algae species Spirogyra and Zygonema , which he correctly interprets as " fécondation ", i.e. fertilization. He also describes the formation of new networks in the cells of Hydrodictyon . Although he has depicted the antheridia and oogonia of the Vaucheria named after him , he did not recognize their meaning.

Vaucher was a gifted teacher and later had several famous students such as Hans Konrad Escher von der Linth , Augustin Pyramus de Candolle , Karl Albert I , later King of Sardinia, Hans Conrad Stadler and Alexandre Colonna-Walewski .

Honors

The algae species Vaucheria DC are named after him . and Vaucheriella Gaillon .
