Königsbrück-Ruhlander Heiden
The Königsbrück-Ruhlander Heiden are a natural area in Saxony and Brandenburg . This is located in the vicinity of the two eponymous cities Königsbrück and Ruhland , which, although located in two different federal states , historically belong to Upper Lusatia and represent border towns of the same. In the west, the Großenhainer Pflege adjoins, in the east the Upper Lusatian heath and pond area . The south is intertwined with the West Lusatian hills and mountains . The natural area of the Königsbrück-Ruhlander Heiden can be divided into three geochors : the Rödernsche and Laußnitzer Heiden, the Königsbrücker Heideland and the Dubringer Moor with the Luppaer Moränenland .
The Königsbrücker Heide and the Ruhlander Heide consist of sandy-gravelly sediments . Sometimes there are quicksand covers and dunes . The basement of granodiorite and greywacke protrudes only in a few places . The sandy soil cannot hold rainwater for long, and flowing and standing water is also found below average. That is why this natural area has a very dry character and a particularly high risk of forest fires, despite average rainfall between 600 and 700 mm .
Since the soils are largely extremely poor in nutrients in addition to the drought, most farmers in this region were relatively poor in historical times compared to those in the West Lusatian hill country. In addition, due to this fact, large farmers prevailed relatively early.
The potential natural vegetation is the birch and pine- oak forest. Currently (2006), however, this is hardly to be found, as monocultural pine forests were established and now dominate. For the long term, it is planned to increase the proportion of hardwood a little.
