history

The Könizer Libraries were founded in 1965 as the Könizer Volksbücherei association with a location at Hessstrasse 14 in Liebefeld / Köniz. The libraries in Niederwangen followed in 1983, Niederscherli in 1985 and Wabern in 2002 . At the Stapfen location, the largest branch was inaugurated in 1991 with around 28,000 books and other media (as of 2015).

In 2011, the municipality's government wanted to centralize the four library locations in one place as part of an austerity program. 3215 people defended themselves against this with a petition , whereupon this austerity measure was dropped.

Organization and goals

The Könizer libraries are organized as an association .

With events and exhibitions, the libraries want to be a cultural platform and enable discussion between cultures. They offer all sections of the population free access to information, training and entertainment. All branches also offer free use of the Internet.

The promotion of reading is a concern of the Köniz libraries. Participation in the national project Buchart (project for early language promotion), Antolin (web platform for reading promotion), story lessons and language animation for toddlers of crawling age are integral parts of the event calendar.

Duration

75,000 media (from books to music CDs, films, magazines to PC games) are offered at four locations. Three branches (Niederscherli, Niederwangen and Wabern) are combined school and community libraries. The largest in the center of Köniz (Stapfen) is purely a community library.

use

Almost 8,000 customers are registered with the Könizer libraries - that corresponds to 20% of the Könizer population.

As one of the first public libraries in Switzerland, the Köniz libraries have switched to EDP and their entire range can be viewed in the online catalog. The online offers also include lists of new acquisitions, reservation options by e-mail or SMS and the opportunity to write comments on the media. The Könizer libraries also offer lending services for digital media ( Bern Digital Library ).
