The granular ground beetle or grained ground beetle ( Carabus granulatus ) is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).

features

Grainy ground beetles are 17 to 23 millimeters long. The chitin shell is bronze-colored and usually shines green. On the wing covers there are clear longitudinal grooves in which there are small "granular" elevations. Both the antennae and the legs are completely black and very long. Exceptionally, the legs can also be red. The wing covers widen in the front half less rounded than in Carabus cancellatus and reach their greatest width behind the middle.

Subspecies

The granular ground beetle has a total of 7 subspecies.

Occurrence

The granular ground beetle is widespread in Europe and Asia. He was also introduced into North America. You can find it on meadows, fields and in forests.

Way of life

It is one of the very few species of real ground beetles that have not completely lost their ability to fly, only the mountain forms are short-winged. Nevertheless, the nocturnal animals usually stay on the ground, where they hunt insects, worms and snails. During the day they hide under tree trunks or stones. From autumn to spring, the animals often overwinter together in tree stumps. Since the grain beetles also like to eat potato beetles, they are very useful for agriculture. The females of the granular ground beetle lay around forty eggs. The larvae molt three times before pupating in the ground. The finished beetles hatch in autumn. The grainy ground beetle is a protected species in Germany.
