The Köyceğiz Gölü is a lake in southwest Turkey in the province of Muğla .

The lake is located 20 km west of Dalaman and about 5 km from the Mediterranean coast. In ancient times, however, the lake did not exist because its waters were directly connected to the Mediterranean. It was part of the Mare Nostrum of the Romans and therefore had no ancient name. Strabon mentions the Polis Kaunos between today's Köyceğiz and the open sea, with direct access via shipping: "; then Kaunos and close by the deep river Kalbis, which allows entry, ...
