The Borkum coast radio station was the first coast radio station in Germany. On the initiative of North German Lloyd , the electric lighthouse on Borkum and the lightship Borkumriff, which is around 30 kilometers northwest of the island, were equipped with Marconi systems for wireless telegraphy in order to report ship arrivals to the destination ports more precisely. The lightship Borkumriff reported the sighted Lloyd ships wirelessly to the lighthouse on Borkum, from which the message was then telegraphed by cable to Bremerhaven. The coast station went into operation on May 15, 1900.
Radar station and transmission mast
In 1966 the small Borkum lighthouse was converted into a radar station. After the conversion, in 1967 the Hein Lehmann company erected a 55 m high steel truss mast, guyed on two levels, next to the lighthouse for the implementation of a radio link to transmit the radar data to the traffic control center of the water and shipping authority in Emden. In 1988 this transmission mast was increased by 12 m , so that its height is now 67 m .
