Kōji Uehara ( Japanese 上原 浩 治 , Uehara Kōji ; born April 3, 1975 in Neyagawa , Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese baseball player . He is a right throwing pitcher who has been under contract with the Boston Red Sox from North American Major League Baseball since 2013 . Before that he played from 1999 to 2008 for the Yomiuri Giants in Japanese professional baseball , then for the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers . With the national team he won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004 and the gold medal at the World Baseball Classic in 2006 .
Uehara, graduate of Osaka Daigaku Taiiku ( "Sport Osaka University") was ge in the first round of the Giants 1998 draftet . In his first professional season in 1999, he achieved 20 wins , 15 of them in successive missions. For this achievement, he was awarded both as Shinjin'ō (Japanese Rookie of the Year ) of the Central League and the Sawamura-Eiji-shō (German "Eiji-Sawamura Prize") for the best pitcher in the league. In ten seasons up to 2008 Uehara achieved a total of 112 wins for the Giants in 276 appearances. In 2002 he received the Sawamura-Eiji-shō again.
In January 2009, he agreed on a two-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles. His first appearance in the Major League was on April 8, 2009.
On December 6, 2012, Uehara signed a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox .
In the 2013 American League Championship Series Uehara was the Most Valuable Player honor. He was involved in 5 games in the series, where he managed a win and 3 saves .
