Location and surroundings

Křížový vrch can be reached by taking the road from the city center to the children's sanatorium in the northeast of the city. A blue hiking trail leads from Cvikov to Trávník ( Glasert ) up the Way of the Cross.

The mountain itself is to be seen as an extension of the Zelený vrch ( Grünberg ) (586 m) to the east .

history

The low basalt mountain was previously called Nüssebergel until a hermitage was built in 1728. In 1729, at Easter, the residents set up three crosses on the summit and a passion play was performed. In 1730 the construction of the first chapel began, which was completed in 1735. Small donated chapels, in which the Passion of Christ was depicted on linen, gradually gave the way to the upper chapel the character of a Way of the Cross .

After the hermitage was forced to close by decree by Emperor Josef II , the decline of the Way of the Cross began in 1782. In addition, the church authorities did everything in their power to ban the Zwickau Passion Play, which was finally achieved in 1797. In 1805 the church decided to build the Way of the Cross in the church in Zwickau and to give up the Calvary. The chapels on the mountain could no longer be repaired. In spite of this, on October 24, 1847, a stone chapel was consecrated in place of the originally wooden grave god chapel, which was built from donations. In 1833 an avenue of lime trees was planted by the Zwickauer Calvarienbergverein.

The Kreuzweg chapels fell into disrepair, so that in 1890 only 4 of them remained. In 1900 14 new chapels were consecrated, which showed pictures of the Passion of the Passion carved out of wood in glass niches. An iron cross and statues of the Virgin Mary , the Evangelist John and St.  Mary Magdalene were erected on the summit . In 1923 a heroes' grove was added for those who died in the First World War .

After the Second World War , the Calvary faced its downfall again. Many chapels were destroyed or gradually fell into disrepair due to bad weather. In 1991 the mayor of Cvikov had all 14 chapels of the Cross and the chapel on the top renovated. However, this remained without equipment . Not much is left of the parks behind. Only the statue of St. Maria Magdalena and the rest of the Virgin Mary (without head) have been preserved. The statue of John was stolen in 2000.
