The KBE V21-24 were four type MS 650 D diesel locomotives from the manufacturer Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) from the 1959 model range. The four locomotives of this type were built in 1959 for the Cologne-Bonn Railways and were owned by the company and successor owners In operation until the beginning of the 1990s. Three locomotives were scrapped, the whereabouts of a locomotive is unknown.

history

The Cologne-Bonn Railways had experience operating diesel locomotives supplied by KHD since 1939. After the Second World War , small locomotives were delivered according to the manufacturer's range of types . From 1959 these four locomotives were delivered. By equipping the locomotives' running gear with Beugniot levers , the locomotives were able to negotiate tight curves without constraints or lurching. They were used in shunting services as well as with handover trips. The driver's cab was designed for road duty, for which they were well suited with the top speed of 70 km / h.

The locomotives were primarily used in Cologne-Sülz , Kendenich and Vochem . For a long time, the entire shunting service could be carried out with these locomotives and other KHD and MaK locomotives. Around 1975 the locomotives were equipped with shunting radio . One locomotive, the KBE V24 , received radio remote control in 1983 .

The V21 was parked in 1981 and was used as a spare parts dispenser . It was scrapped in 1989. For the other locomotives, the end of service began with the delivery of MaK locomotives with three-phase drive technology .

The V22 was taken over by the successor company Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln (HGK) and was in service until the mid-1990s. Then it was sold to Italy and is said to have been scrapped there after 2000.

The V23 was sold to Italy around 1987, its whereabouts are unknown.

The V24 , however, stayed in Germany. After being used by the HGK , it was sold to the Dürener Kreisbahn and was used there until 1997. In the same year it was sold to a company in Baesweiler . In 2003 the locomotive was scrapped.

technical description

The locomotives that were built in 1959 belonged to a series of 6 types from the KHD program with rod drive medium performance class from the 1959 type program. The criterion for the medium performance class was the engine output between 300 hp and 1,000 hp. The designation was derived from the scheme of the middle locomotive with rod drive, the engine power in HP and the wheel arrangement D.

The locomotives were designed as front end locomotives with a larger front end for the machinery and a smaller one for the auxiliary operations. The appearance was characterized by the fact that the engine driver could move around the driver's cab and the porches and the many handrails on the perimeter with practically no risk. The four drive wheels mounted in the rigid locomotive frame were all laterally displaceable and mounted in Beugniot levers . As a result, the locomotives had very good cornering at high speeds and could easily negotiate curve radii of up to 80 meters.

The machinery consisted of an eight-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine and a hydraulic fluid transmission from Voith .
