The type series KHD A8M 324 R type D was a four-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for shunting and mainline service on routes with lower axle pressure . A total of eleven locomotives were built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) between 1939 and 1943 , and they were in service until 1982.

One locomotive has been preserved and is today (2020) in the Railway Museum of the Cologne-Bonner Eisenbahn-Freunde e. V.

development

In addition to the KHD A8M 324 R type C , a four-axle locomotive with the same engine configuration was built one year later. In addition to the eleven built locomotives, there are another eight, for which it is not fully clear whether they were designed with three or four axles. The locomotives were delivered to private companies:

In addition, a locomotive was delivered to an oil refinery in Romania .

technology

The engine compartment is rounded and, like the three-axle variant, has the same length over buffers . The only difference was the number of axles and the necessary changes to the chassis.

It was powered by the high-speed eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine A8M 324 R from KHD, which had an output that was increased to 320 hp compared to the type C engine. After the engine, a four-speed change gearbox with reversing gear was connected via a single-disc dry clutch . The transmission was located under the cab, where there was also the dummy shaft , the third axis is driven by via a drive rod. The locomotives were approved for a speed of 25 km / h.

The spacious driver's cab was designed with large rectangular windows, as in the type C. With a mechanical brake, all wheels were braked on one side from the front.

commitment

Union Rheinische Braunkohlen fuel AG 1 and 2

Initially, two locomotives were in use, which provided shunting service in the transfer station until 1964 . Then the UK 2 was parked. The UK 1 continued to be used on the connecting line. The storage date is not known. In 1987 it was transferred to the Railway Museum of the Cologne-Bonner Eisenbahn-Freunde e. V. where it will be available in 2020. It is the only machine with the KHD A8M 324 R engine configuration .

Dynamit AG Troisdorf

The machine with the serial number 36.857 , which was delivered to the company in 1941, was in service for almost as long . In the 1940s the locomotive came to a tank farm in Farge , the company and its successor companies kept the locomotive until the beginning of 1980, in April 1980 it was parked and in 1981 it was scrapped in Bremen .
