The type series KHD A8M 324 R type C was a three-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for shunting and light mainline service. A total of three locomotives were built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) between 1938 and 1941 ; they were in service until 1980.

No locomotive of the series has survived.

development

From 1935 the KHD company had a new series of high -speed four-stroke diesel engines from the range for stationary machines. The range of services included engines from 70 to 320 hp.

In 1938 a type of locomotive with an eight-cylinder engine of this series was put into service, one of which was given to the Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn . Another two locomotives were delivered to BMW Flugmotorenbau in 1941 .

The name of the locomotive was derived from the engine name; A8M 324 R means : engine series A = vertical four-stroke diesel engine in series, 8 = number of cylinders, M = water-cooled, 3 = development stage 3 of the engine, 24 = piston stroke of the engine in cm, R = standard-gauge shunting locomotive.

technology

The locomotives had larger dimensions due to the eight-cylinder in-line engine. They had a machine front end and a driver's cab behind it, which was spacious. The power is transmitted by a rod drive , with the jackshaft as a transmission output shaft behind the drive wheels under the driver's cab. The locomotives had a connecting rod and two coupling rods for power transmission from the jackshaft .

There was a greater distance between the first and second axes.

It is driven by a high-speed eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from KHD, which, after a dry single-disk clutch, is followed by a gearbox with reversing gear. The locomotives had an overdrive and could reach a speed of 50 km / h.

The spacious cab had large windows. It had transition platforms to enable the transition to passenger cars .

commitment

WLE DL 2

The locomotive was delivered in 1938 and stationed in Lippstadt . When used at the WLE , the locomotive was noticeable due to its poor running properties, for which the jackshaft located outside the axle group was blamed.

In 1940 the locomotive was handed over to the Navy in Kiel . In 1945 it came to the Royal Air Force Germany at Westerland airfield . In 1953 it came to the Niebüll – Dagebüll small railway and in 1960 to the Düren district railway , where it stayed until 1970. In the same year the locomotive was retired and scrapped.

BMW

Two locomotives were delivered to BMW aircraft engine construction in 1941 . While one locomotive was eliminated in 1954, the other came to the Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke in 1951 and was active there until 1982, when it was parked and scrapped.
