KIM Competence Center Interoperable Metadata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Competence Center Interoperable Metadata (KIM) deals with national and international metadata standards as well as the cross-application integration of metadata in the context of the Semantic Web . The aim of KIM is to improve the interoperability of metadata in German-speaking countries. To achieve this, KIM supports the development of metadata standards, the interoperable design of metadata formats and thus the optimal use of metadata in digital information environments by means of teaching materials, training courses, advice and best practice solutions. In addition, KIM promotes communication and exchange with international organizations and projects and coordinates developments in the German-speaking area with developments in the international area.

Project partner

The Competence Center Interoperable Metadata is being created as part of the KIM project. KIM has a term of two years and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Information platform

As part of KIM, an information platform is being created with the homepage of the competence center, which provides teaching and information materials on national and international metadata standards and interoperability. The materials include translations of relevant Dublin Core documents from English into German, a report on the KIM user survey of metadata and the KIM- DINI -Technology -Watch-Report - standards and standardization.

Communication platform

As a communication platform, KIM promotes the exchange with international organizations and projects in the field of metadata and interoperability and coordinates developments in the German-speaking area with international developments. The KIM experts bring requirements and developments from the German-speaking community to the relevant international bodies. In this context, KIM is involved in the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and the W3C . At the same time, KIM informs the community in German-speaking countries about current international developments in workshops and materials.

Services

KIM offers services such as training, advice and teaching material to support metadata users in the development of interoperable metadata profiles, the development of metadata standards and the interoperable design of metadata formats. In cooperation with universities, KIM develops tutorials that consist of learning modules e.g. B. on the topics "Introduction to Metadata" or "Interoperability and Metadata" exist. KIM also develops workshops on these topics for metadata users from research, administration, culture and industry.

KIM working groups

The KIM working groups are made up of experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and provide services for metadata users in German-speaking countries. The KIM working group Interoperable Metadata Profiles (KIM-AG IM) develops certification procedures for metadata profiles from German-speaking countries and works on the further development of international standards. With the aim of increasing the awareness of the Dublin Core core elements and thus their application in the German-speaking area, the DCMES translation work group has created the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set Version 1.1. translated from English into German.

International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications 2008

KIM is co-organizer of the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications 2008 in Berlin in September. The international conference, whose central theme in 2008 is “Metadata for Social and Semantic Applications”, serves as a platform for the exchange of current developments and practical experiences in the field of metadata and the Dublin Core standards. The focus is on metadata in the focus of semantic web and social computing (blogs, wikis ).
