KOSMA and TIRGO

The Cologne Observatory for Submillimeter Astronomy (KOSMA) was a radio telescope set up on the Gornergrat near Zermatt in Switzerland , which was built by the 1st Physics Institute of the University of Cologne in 1985.

Due to the exposed location ( 3135  m above sea level ), only a few atmospheric disturbances influenced the research work. With the 3-meter parabolic mirror and the sensitive spectrometers , interstellar molecular connections in the sub-millimeter range were detected. KOSMA was operated by both the University of Cologne and the Argelander Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn . In 1996 the mirror was completely renewed.

The CCOSMA telescope was rebuilt in Yangbajain in Damxung , Tibet , at an altitude of 4300 m. At the beginning of 2011 it went into operation at the new location.
