history

The Magdeburg Polte-Werke active in the armaments sector included several satellite concentration camps , including two in the city. On April 11, 1945, US troops coming from the west had reached Magdeburg. The SS guards deployed in the satellite camps then left the camps on April 12, 1945. The Volkssturm units belonging to the plant , supported by Hitler Youths , then drove 3,500 inmates east of the city on April 13, 1945. The aim was an evacuation to the Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen concentration camps . In the area of the New World Stadium , the march came under artillery fire. The prisoners then tried to seek shelter in bomb craters. At least 42 people were shot dead by the guards. It is said that a Hitler Youth proudly reported killing 18 people with his pistol. The death march later continued, with those who stayed behind or those who flee were shot. In the end, around 600 women survived; the fate of the men is unknown.

At least three of the members of the Volkssturm involved were brought to trial in the GDR. The district court Magdeburg imposed on 22 February 1951, lifelong prison sentence and a prison sentence of eight years and a prison sentence of ten years. However, following a decision by the Halle Higher Regional Court on January 4, 1952, the judgment was overturned and the defendants were acquitted on August 27, 1952 by the Magdeburg Regional Court.
