The concentration camp memorial near Hubmersberg

The concentration camp memorial near Hubmersberg is a memorial that commemorates events that occurred during the rule of the Nazi regime.

Location and history

The memorial is located about one and a half kilometers southwest of the small Middle Franconian hamlet Hubmersberg , a district of the municipality of Pommelsbrunn . It is located in a small forest clearing near the narrow country road that connects Hubmersberg with the Pegnitz valley.

The memorial commemorates the site of a corpse cremation site where the cremation of victims of the Hersbruck satellite camp took place on a November night in 1944 . During that one night, the corpses of around 300 concentration camp inmates were cremated, who had died as a result of the harsh conditions of camp life and the work required of them.

The memorial consists of a stylized grave slab with an inscription. An obelisk about five and a half meters high has been erected at one corner of the tombstone, the top of which is formed by a stone flame. The memorial was erected in 1950 by the then district of Hersbruck and, like the concentration camp memorial near Schupf, is based on a design by Ernst Rücker . As building material for the memorial granite was from the quarries at Flossenbürg used where the Flossenburg concentration camp to the main camp had the satellite camp Hersbruck found.
