Kačkala (pronounced Katschkalla) is an American - Czech women's a cappella - Quintet .

history

The group was founded spontaneously in 1999 when there was space for another ensemble on the occasion of the seventh theater festival in Tábor . The activist Hilary "Backdoor Bobbi" Binder, drummer of the instrumental jazz - punk duo Sabot fulfilled her long-cherished dream of an all women a cappella ensemble together with Petra "Saddlesore Sadie" Podlahová and the sisters Eva "Luscious Lucille" Kubešová and Kateřina "Pretty Pink Pussy" Kubešová. Lexa “Black Belt Betty” Walsh replaces Petra Podlahová in 2005 and Stacy “Ruby Royale” Rubin complements the quartet when performing as a quartet.

style

Schlager and pop music - as is often the case with a large number of other a cappella ensembles - are not influential in their music and texts. In the beginning, Kačkala was stylistically oriented towards country music , which she mixed with Czech children's songs and other elements. Influences from folk , barbershop , jazz or riot grrrl- punk are clearly recognizable. The group does without cover versions of well-known songs and sings mostly their own compositions. She herself describes her songs as a "mix of compositions about crazy girls, bad girls and sad girls" .

With their slightly frivolous stage personalities and names, the women in vintage or cowgirl style lean on westerns or gangster films .

Her lyrics alternate between English and Czech .
