history

The island - or at least a large piece of land on it - was acquired by the natural scientist Theodor Kleinschmidt in mid-1879 . The sellers were some tribesmen from the neighboring island of Utuan who held land on Kabakon. A private letter to Rev. Benjamin Danks, in which Kleinschmidt reported on January 5, 1880 about his purchase of "Kambe Kounae (Kapakon)", is valid as evidence. According to other sources, Kleinschmidt acquired northeastern Ulu.

During German colonial times, there were coconut plantations on Kabakon (location) . In 1902 August Engelhardt settled on the island and founded a community called "Sun Order - Equatorial Settlement Community". The sun order advocated the exclusive consumption of coconuts and nudism . Sometimes the order is said to have had up to 30 members. The Order of the Sun and the coconut diet were advertised in Germany with brochures: “Naked cocovorism is God's will. The pure coconut diet makes you immortal and unites with God. ”However, many German civilization refugees who followed Engelhardt's call fell ill or died soon after their arrival on Kabakon. Others returned to their homeland discouraged. The last sun worshipers left the island after the First World War. Engelhardt himself died on Kabakon in 1919.
