Kabalega
Chwa II. Kabalega (or Kabarega ; * 1853 ; † 1923 in Jinja , Uganda ) was the King ( Omukama ) of the Bunyoro Empire in what is now Uganda from 1869 to 1898 . For a long time his residence was Mparo .
He ascended the throne of Bunyoros in 1869. He soon marched into the Toro empire under the Omukama Nyaika Kasunga . In 1873 he temporarily lost the throne during a rebellion, but was able to regain it that same year.
In the 1890s he began to offer armed resistance against the British, who were increasingly trying to gain influence and wanted to establish a protectorate over Uganda. After a long struggle, Bunyoro was defeated and Kabalega lost his throne on April 3, 1898. He was arrested on April 9, 1899 and, like Mwanga II, exiled from Buganda to the Seychelles . He was only able to return to Bunyoro in 1923, but died shortly before he reached the border of his home empire.
Varia
In 1972, the dictator Idi Amin renamed Murchison Falls and the surrounding Murchison Falls National Park to Kabalega Falls in memory of Chwa II.
