As Kabelgatt ( English cable stage, rope store, bosun's easy Dutch kabelgat ) or Bootsmann Store also is on ships a storage space for small articles such as spare parts, ropes , shackles , blocks , anchor chain designated tool or paints and varnishes. It is usually located in the foredeck. On larger ships the Kabelgatt is a walk-in room in the foredeck and is sometimes looked after by a Kabelgatt sailor (occasionally also a Kabelgatt steward or Kabel-Ede). The Kabelgatt sailor is an experienced man, usually employed by the boatswain, who manages the deck gate.
