Kakheti pig

The Kakheti pig ( Georgian : კახური , Kachuri ) is a land pig breed from Georgia .

Breeding history

The Kakheti pig shows features of a primitive breed that correspond to the wild boar , such as the position of the lower molars, the long, thin tear bones and the longitudinal stripe pattern of the piglets.

  • Erect ears
  • Body short
  • Chest broad and deep
  • Back straight and strong
  • Correct feet and legs with hard claws
  • The bristles are hard, long and straight
  • Weight sows 62 kg, boars 85 kg
  • Disease resistance

The Kakheti pigs are kept as a gene reserve that can be crossed into the performance breeds again and again.

Occurrence

In the past, the Kakheti pigs were common all over Georgia . Today they still exist in the districts Akhmeta , Telavi , Kvareli , Gurjaani and Dusheti in Kakheti . In 1980 there were only 745 pure-bred animals left.
