The Royal Cadetten-Haus was an educational institution in Stolp (at the time of its founding also "Stolpe") in Western Pomerania . It was founded in 1769 and moved to Potsdam in 1811 .

history

On June 1, 1769, a cadet house was opened in Langen Strasse opposite the castle. It was supposed to be an educational facility for sons from impoverished noble families, many of whom had lost their fathers in the Seven Years War. It was founded on the initiative of King Friedrich II. He wanted to raise the moral and educational level of the previously brutalized condition of military candidates from Western Pomerania. At first there was space for 48 students.

In 1777/78 two more were added to the existing building, so that the number of students could increase to 96. In 1811 the facility was relocated to Potsdam by royal decree (the cadet house there had previously moved to Berlin).

Then a house for the disabled was set up in the buildings, which still existed in 1920. They probably no longer exist today.

Structures

student

The students mostly came from impoverished noble families in the Lauenburg , Rummelsburg , Bütow and Stolpe districts in Western Pomerania, some from Brandenburg, Silesia or Poland. The entire stay was free for them. In total there were 907 of these effective cadets , of whom only 5 were of non-noble origin. In addition, there were 58 pensioners , sons from wealthy families, who could only get vacancies if there were no more candidates, and who paid for accommodation and tuition. The boys were between eight and ten years old when they started.

classes

There were (at least since 1778) six classes. The lower two taught religion, reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, and history. The top four featured calligraphy, spelling, letter style, geometry and French, as well as dancing (and fencing?).

The teachers ( informators ) were mostly theologians after completing their studies ( candidates in theology ). They each taught eight students in almost all subjects; there was a separate teacher for French and dance.

Graduates

Most of the students entered the Prussian army after graduation, where they pursued a career as an officer, rarely as an ensign. A few had to leave school because they were unsuitable , and some died.
