The coffee funnel is a passable street and an important hub for inner-city traffic in the south of the Thuringian capital Erfurt .

The coffee funnel is at the intersection of the B 4 and Erfurter Stadtring at the point where the B 4 leads to the city ring. Four streets lead away from the square. Schillerstraße leads east and west, Löberstraße leads north into the city center and Arnstädter Straße leads out of town to the south . The historic Löbertor was once located near the coffee funnel with the Löbervorstadt to the south , the center of which is now the square. The architecture of its peripheral development is shaped by the Wilhelminian era, as the quarter was built around 1875. The B 4 Ilmenau – Erfurt – Nordhausen and the B 7 Weimar – Erfurt – Gotha as well as the lines 1 and 6 of the Erfurt tram , which have a stop named after the square, lead over the coffee funnel .

The square is also the hub of the sewer system, water, telephone and gas supply for the development areas to the south. The place is considered flood-proof. The flood ditch and a railway line run north of the coffee funnel .

Café funnel

The former Café Trichter before its destruction

The square got its unusual name from a former café that belonged to a Mr. Funnel and had nothing to do with a coffee funnel . The popularity of this café stems from the catchy name and the fact that it was an easy-to-reach stop on walks in the Erfurt Steigerwald . The historic café had a stepped architecture, which was unusual for the time, whereby the steps could be used as terraces for guests. In 1937 the café was taken over by Steigerbrauerei AG . During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged in an air raid and lost its architectural charm as it could only be partially rebuilt.

With the conversion of the square into a traffic junction, the charm of the café was lost and after several changes of ownership during the GDR era it became dilapidated due to long vacancy in the eighties, demolished in March 1993 and replaced by an office building with a completely different architecture.
