Gebrüder Treitschke is the name of a brewery that existed under the company from 1822 to 1908 in Erfurt and was then continued as Steigerbrauerei AG .

history

The Treitschke family comes from the Saxon Ore Mountains . In 1753 part of the family moved from Jöhstadt to Erfurt. She first became wealthy as a cloth and wine merchant .

Founding of the family company Gebrüder Treitschke

1822 acquired Johann Friedrich Heinrich Treitschke the right to brew and founded in the Market Street 34 a brewery. A little later he handed it over to his sons Wilhelm and Robert . The company then traded as the Treitschke brothers . The daughter of the brewery founder, Carolina Franziska Dorothea , also contributed to the company's development by marrying Carl Johann Christian Wilhelm Heydenreich in 1833, the man who was responsible for introducing the art of brewing based on the English model in the Grand Duchy of Weimar . He was also the owner of the Oberweimar manor and from 1839 also owner of the Ehringsdorf manor . In 1839 he first founded a brandy distillery on this site, which later became the Ehringsdorf brewery.

Expansion under Wilhelm Treitschke jun.

After the very early death of the two brothers, the business was taken over from 1868 by Wilhelm Treitschke's son Wilhelm Treitschke jun. continued. The water for the brewery initially came directly from the Fallochgraben , an open body of water that once flowed through the Pargamentergasse and could be crossed over a bridge at the confluence with Domplatz (then Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz) . In 1873, Wilhelm Treitschke outsourced the company from the cramped old town to newly constructed production buildings on the edge of the Steigerwald . The clear spring water from the Steiger contributed to the favorable location.

Brewed in the brewery Brothers Treitschke beer was not only restaurateurs sold, but also in bottles filled. To promote sales, the company acquired several inns in Erfurt, including the Zum Deutschen Schwert inn on Pergamentergasse and the Zum golden Einhorn restaurant on Domplatz, which offered space for more than 1,000 guests in its concert garden.

Change as Steigerbrauerei Aktiengesellschaft

In 1908 the company was converted into a stock corporation and from then on called itself "Steigerbrauerei Aktiengesellschaft formerly Gebr. Treitschke" . With the fresh capital, the company was able to expand further. The buildings on the Steiger were expanded and, like a castle, dominated the edge of the Steiger above today's Motzstrasse. Up to 45,000 hectoliters were brewed and bottled annually. The Severi-Pilsner was also advertised on beer mats with the cathedral as an advertising medium. The Steiger brewery was also one of the first Thuringian breweries to collect a deposit for their bottled beer. From July 1, 1915, ten pfennigs had to be paid per bottle.

The former Café Trichter

In 1923 a partnership agreement was signed with the Eisenach stock brewery and the malting director Hermann Schmiedel in Langensalza in order to assert itself against the competition. Inns have also been taken over in Eisenach and Gotha . In 1937 the company took over another restaurant in Erfurt, the Café Trichter, at the intersection of Löberstrasse and Schillerstrasse .

Continuation in the GDR era

After the Second World War, the Steiger brewery initially became a limited partnership . This was converted into a state- owned company in 1972 .

The water supply became an increasing problem, which made new deep boreholes necessary from 1960. This led to the destruction of the nearby cress park . Until 1982 "Severi-Pilsner" and other beers were brewed at the Steiger location. Thereafter, the company was assigned to VEB Braugold and now a part of the company in which mainly non-alcoholic soft drinks, lemonades and mineral water were bottled. In 1990 there were 63 employees there.

Closure by the trust company

1990 has been under the supervision Treuhandanstalt the Steiger Brunnen GmbH founded, which was closed already 1994th The buildings were then gutted and converted into the seat of the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior , which was previously located on Schillerstrasse.
