Life

She was born into a family who made a living framing pictures. At the age of about 15 she began to write haiku without having been trained. When the two poets Kagami Shikō and Rosen traveled independently through Kaga in 1721 , they were both extremely impressed by their talent. Her poems were influenced by the Shikō Mino school.

Through the publication of her poems, she became so well known throughout the country over the years that the haiku poet Uchū mentioned her in his work in 1725 to pay tribute to her. At the age of 52 she became a nun and took the name Soen ( 素 園 ).
