Kai Sundmacher (born March 24, 1965 in Hildesheim ) is a German process engineer . He is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg and Head of the Chair for Process Systems Engineering at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

Live and act

Kai Sundmacher completed his studies in mechanical engineering and process engineering at the University of Hanover and at Clausthal University of Technology , which he graduated in 1990 with a degree in process engineering. He received his doctorate at the Institute for Chemical Process Engineering at the TU Clausthal in 1995. He then headed the research groups “reactive distillation” and “electrochemical reaction technology”.

After a research stay as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Newcastle , UK, he completed his habilitation at the TU Clausthal in 1998 in the field of "Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering". In 1999 he accepted the call to the C4 chair for process systems engineering at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

In 2001 he was appointed Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg.

Kai Sundmacher received numerous prizes for his research results (see also: Awards, honors & memberships ), u. a. the Carl Zerbe Prize of the German Scientific Society for Natural Gas, Petroleum and Coal (1998), the Arnold Eucken Prize of the Association of German Engineers (1999), the Meyer Stuckmann Science Prize of the BTU Cottbus (2008) and the Einstein Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2009). Since 2010 he has been visiting professor at the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Kai Sundmacher is a member of several scientific societies (including AIChE, DGMK, ISE, VDI) and co-editor of the journal "Chemical Engineering Science".
