K. Sivan ( Kailasavadivoo Sivan ; born April 14, 1957 ) is an Indian space scientist and since January 15, 2018 the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He is the former director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and the Liquid Propulsion Center .

Sivan is the son of a farmer. He studied at a state Tamil middle school in Sarakkalvilai village and later in Vallankumaranvilai in Kanyakumari district . He is the first in his family to graduate. In 1980, Sivan left the Institute of Technology Madras with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. He then received a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science ( Bangalore ) in 1982 and began his career at ISRO. In 2006, he earned a PhD in aerospace from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay . He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering , the Aeronautical Society of India and the Systems Society of India .

In German-speaking countries, Sivan became known through a gesture by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi . On September 6, 2019, the "Vikram Landing Unit" was supposed to land on the moon with the Chandrayaan-2 lunar vehicle between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. CEST . Sivan, as chairman of ISRO, was supposed to report the successful landing live and personally to the prime minister. However, when radio contact broke off 2 km above the surface of the moon and the failure of the mission had to be reported, Sivan collapsed in front of the cameras. Unexpectedly , the Prime Minister hugged ISRO Chairman Sivan and comforted him.
